Description of Hamzah Haz (Ketapang, West Kalimantan, February 15, 1940) was the ninth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, who served in 2001 along with the rise of Megawati Sukarnoputri became president. In the party, Hamzah Haz has served as Chairman of the United Development Party (PPP). In Election 2004, Hamzah Haz was nominated as presidential candidate by PPP, paired with Agum Gumelar as a candidate for vice president.

Hamzah has been active since junior high organization. Graduated from Upper Secondary School of Economics (SMEA) in Pontianak in 1961, he became a newspaper reporter Pontianak, Free. Because the active organization since junior high school, in college he was also active organizing by setting up the Indonesian Islamic Students Movement and was elected as chairman.

In 1965, Hamzah returned to Pontianak and continued his studies at the Faculty of Economics, University Tanjungpura majored in economics of the company. Outside the campus, he became Chairman of the Presidium of Pontianak Consulate and the U.S. representative parliament Force 66 in West Kalimantan. Hamzah had been Vice Chairman of the branch of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) West Kalimantan. Then, represent NU at the House of Parliament Senayan in 1971. After NU fuse into the United Development Party (PPP), he was elected to the House of Representatives representing the PPP. In the PPP, he had several periods into the board. Finally, he became one of the DPP chairman PPP, before finally elected as Chairman of the DPP PPP at the end of 1998.

In 1998, Hamzah became the State Minister of Investment / Head of Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) in the cabinet of President BJ Habibie. As a result of the 1999 elections formed the leadership of President Abdurrahman Wahid's cabinet. On 29 October 1999, he was appointed Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare and Poverty Alleviation (Coordinating Minister for Welfare and Poverty Alleviation). Then on July 26, 2001, Hamzah was elected as the ninth Vice President of Indonesia.
