foto Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana IX Description Born in Yogyakarta by name G.R.M Dorojatun on April 12, 1912, Hamengkubuwana IX is the son of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana VIII and Raden Ajeng Kustilah. At the age of 4 years Hamengkubuwana IX lived separated from his family. He received education at HIS in Yogyakarta, MULO in Semarang, and AMS in Bandung. In the 1930s he enrolled at Rijkuniversiteit (now Universiteit Leiden), Netherlands (Sultan Henkie). Hamengkubuwana IX was crowned as the Sultan of Yogyakarta on March 18, 1940 with a degree Sampeyan Dalem Ingkang Sinuhun Kanjeng Sultan Hamengkubuwana Senapati-ing-Ngalaga Abdurrahman Sayidin Panatagama khalifatullah ingkang Jumeneng Kaping Sanga. He is the sultan who opposed the Dutch colonial and encourage independence of Indonesia. In addition, he also pushed for the government of Indonesia gives special status for Yogyakarta with special predicate.

Before crowned as the Sultah, the Sultan was 28 years old negotiate tough for 4 months by a senior Dutch diplomat Dr. Lucien Adams about the autonomy of Yogyakarta. In times of Japan, Sultan prohibit delivery romusha by conducting local projects of irrigation ditch Mataram. Sultan and Pakualam are the first local authorities that merged into the Republic of Indonesia. Sultan who invited the President to lead from Yogyakarta, after Jakarta controlled by the Dutch in the Dutch Military Aggression I.

Role of Sultan Hamengkubuwana IX in General Attack on March 1, 1949 by the National Army is still not accordance with the Suharto version. In 1973 he was appointed as vice president. At the end of his term in 1978, he refused to be re-elected as vice president for health reasons. However, there are rumors saying that the real reason he did not like the retreat is due to President Suharto's repressive as in the event Malari and float on the Corruption, collation and nepotism. He attended the celebration of 50 years of rule of Queen Wilhelmina in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 1938. Sunday night, October 2, 1988, he died at George Washington University Medical Center, the United States and was buried in the cemetery of the sultan of Mataram in Imogiri, Bantul regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Sultan Hamengku Buwana IX was recorded as the longest-serving governor in Indonesia between 1945 - 1988 and the longest King of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta between 1940-1988.
