Wide Indonesia , with long and various past histories, has hundreds of castles scattered all over, formerly inhabited by the kings once ruling in the areas. But there are only 6 (six) palaces which can be called as the Presidential palace. The Six palaces have become the witnesses of the struggle of the Indonesian nation from time to time , each with its different stories.
The State Palace and the Freedom Palace in Jakarta play an important role in the decision making process for the Indonesian people, either in Dutch, English, Japanese colonization or after independence.
The State Palace, of which age is about three quarters century older than the Istana Merdeka (Freedom Palace), was originally a private residence of an ordinary Dutch citizen. Since 1816, the building has been playing a role as a palace of the highest authorities of the Dutch East Indies, ie, after the Commissioner General of the Netherlands GAGP Baron van der Capellen chose the building as a residence.
The State Palace building was originally known as "Governor-General Hotel" because it was used as an inn aside from accommodating some rushing of the General Secretariat of the Dutch government. But in the course of time, the building was deemed insufficient, so that a new building was established in the back yard facing Koningsplein (now Medan Merdeka). The Building completed in 1879 is now known as Freedom Palace. With the disappearance of colonialism from Eart Indonesia , then the two palaces now belong to the Indonesian nation and become the center of state ceremonies concerning the life of the State of Indonesia.
