A year of elections in the world`s most populous Muslim state and third-largest democracy culminated on 20 September 2004, when 123 million Indonesians voted in a second round of polls to choose their President. The vote gave a landslide victory to retired three-star general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the former coordinating minister for political and security affairs, who began his five-year term as Indonesia`s sixth president (the fourth since 1998) on 20 October.
